Kurds for Labour AGM: A Gathering of Solidarity and Progress
Several MPs, Lords, and councillors contributed to the AGM, offering messages of solidarity and inspiration. Joe Powell MP opened the event by expressing his gratitude for the Kurdish community’s involvement in his campaign, particularly recognising the efforts of those who campaigned for him in Kensington. Jim Dickson MP praised the two former Kurdish mayors in Lambeth for their exemplary leadership and fundraising abilities, highlighting the diversity and strength of the Kurdish presence in his constituency.
Councillors also played an important role in the event, with Cllr Makbule Gunes reflecting on the significant increase in Kurdish political representation, noting that the first Kurdish MP was elected in 2019. She emphasised the importance of continued progress in representation for future generations. Cllr Ajda Ovat, one of three Kurdish councillors in Haringey, spoke about the legacy of Kurdish political leaders like Feryal Clark and Ibrahim Dogus, thanking them for their trailblazing work and inspiring future Kurdish leaders. She highlighted the economic, social, and political contributions of the Kurdish community while reminding everyone of the ongoing oppression faced by Kurds in their homeland.
Throughout the AGM, attendees enthusiastically contributed their recommendations on how to further empower the Kurdish community and support the Labour Party's goals. Action plans were discussed to ensure the organisation is ready to work swiftly and efficiently on behalf of Kurdish communities across the UK. An executive committee of 20 people was selected to lead these efforts, ensuring Kurds for Labour remains proactive in addressing key issues.
One of the key themes that emerged during the discussions was gender equality, a foundational goal of Kurds for Labour. The topic sparked meaningful conversations on the importance of ensuring women’s voices are heard at all levels of political and community leadership. The commitment to gender equality was evident, with several speakers highlighting the progress made and the work that still lies ahead to ensure equitable participation for all.
Sonia Kumar MP drew parallels between the Kurdish and Sikh struggles, sharing her own experience of Kurdish support during her elections. She encouraged greater collaboration between minority communities and called on Kurdish individuals to step forward and seek positions within the Labour Party.
As the AGM drew to a close, it was clear that Kurds for Labour remains a powerful force for change. The enthusiasm, solidarity, and determination displayed by attendees set a strong foundation for the year ahead, as the organisation continues its vital work in advocating for the Kurdish community and promoting progressive values within the Labour movement.
